Electronica: DJ Sir Thomas
Saturday, March 01, 2008
| Comments (0)

Sir Thomas, A.K.A. Tom Havens has become quite the stalwart in the local Electronica / Techno scene.  Back in ’98, Havens witnessed legendary master Seb Fontaine twist up the tables in London and was hooked.  Vowing to someday open for him, his thought echoed out as words while Fontaine walked past.  Several years later, Sir Thomas is now the main room resident DJ at famed Club Vinyl on Broadway.  He conquers with this statement off an interview with Adam Bauer from Beat Tour: “The crowd is so amped every time. I love playing here.  I couldn’t think of a better place to have a residency.”  With a continuing line-up of peers that have or will share the platform including Spooky, Dean Colman, Louie Devito, DJ Three, Tony Thomas, DJ AM, Kaskade, Twenty40, Daradude, Rob Swift, Mu$a, Lowkey and more, Sir Thomas undoubtedly has or will physically shake your inner core with some freakish slow tempo or breakneck beats and mashes alongside his associates and fans.

With mix influences that include afore mentioned Fontaine, he also likens his essence to renowned hit master John Digweed, with flavors of Mashtronic and DJ Sasha to even out the palette.  Preferring to vibe off the crowd, his penchant for finding the right 16 bars of music over and over is right up there with the best.

DJ Sir Thomas also has quite the track record (pun intended).  His 303 highlights include Skylab, Global Dance Festival, Caffeine, Brainwash 2, Moonbase, and Red Alert to mention a few.  Nationally he has spun in Miami @ the WMC, Club Compound in Atlanta, and the terrace night club in El Salvador.  He also works for burgeoning Beatport.com as a content manager.

Do passionate pledges really happen?  Ask Havens the morning of March 14th.  After sharing the decks again with his idol Seb Fontaine at the Church the night before, I would say that him stating “mark my words, someday I will open up for you” back in ’98 is going to feel real good in Sir Thomas’ memory bank for a long time to come.  With thumps hitting my chest and my two Grey Goose and Limes in hand, I am heading over to shake hands with DJ Sir Thomas now…Peace.  X

Electronica: Sub.mission and Communikey Get Nice
Saturday, March 01, 2008
| Comments (0)

Saturday, February 16th marked a fresh collaboration between two top-notch crews in Denver and Boulder – Sub.mission representing dubstep, and Communikey bringing techno.  The event also featured the dance-floor friendly set by one of dubstep’s most reputable DJs – Joe Nice.  The show was held at Kazmos in Denver, the intimate set for a line-up of active local DJs.  Spectators also got a taste of the first Colorado appearance by Baltimore’s Joe Nice who played a key role in proliferating the viral sounds of dubstep throughout the United States.  Sub.mission has been successful in bringing the sub-bass of dubstep and its cultivators to Colorado and Joe Nice was another testament to this effort.  Representing Communikey were DJs Alala one and Brandon Brown playing with Sub.mission DJs Mike Honcho and Budros Gali: meshing tastes and mingling crowds.  By the time Joe Nice came on, partygoers were warmed up for his dubplates, notable remixes, smiles and vibrations abound.  Crowds were tickled when he started with trademark R&B tracks and then moved on to rhythmic heavy tracks interspersed with clever remixes of artists such as Joanna Newsom and Uncle Sam.  Throughout the night, the dance floor was busy with people dancing, enjoying the vibe, and soaking in the lucrative beats.  Stay tuned for a massive Communikey electronic music festival in April and more dubstep events and bass wobbling sounds from Sub.mission DJs, who co-host a radio show called Dank Dealz on Dubstep.fm.  X
