| May 22, 2012 | 0 Comments

Denver, Colo. – May 22, 2012 – Plans are nearly complete for the 41st Annual CHUN Capitol Hill People’s Fair, produced by Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods, a registered Denver neighborhood organization.  The People’s Fair serves as the kick-off to the summer festival season.  The People’s Fair will be held on Saturday, June 2 from 10:00am-8:00pm, and Sunday, June 3 from 10:00am-7:00pm at Civic Center Park in Downtown Denver.

The People’s Fair began as a small gathering in 1972 at Morey Middle School in historic Capitol Hill.  In 1974, CHUN assumed production of the People’s Fair, and in 1976 the Fair moved to the grounds of East High School, after outgrowing the space at Morey.  The People’s Fair continued to grow and in 1987 it was moved to its current location at Civic Center Park.

Today the People’s Fair is one of the largest two-day festivals in the country with over 250,000 fairgoers, and is one of Colorado’s longest-running outdoor urban festivals featuring handmade arts & crafts, food from local restaurants, kids activities, and live local entertainment.  Special features of the People’s Fair include a wine pavilion adjacent to the jazz stage, the Mural Project (groups of Denver youth design and create murals that share a central theme during the Fair), a Passport Scavenger Hunt, and an ever-evolving Kids and Family Area with kids craft projects, a carnival, and much more.

Art:                 With over 200 artists displaying their hand-crafted goods, the People’s Fair is

Colorado’s Premier Arts and Crafts Festival.  For unique gifts and affordable art, the People’s Fair is the place to shop!

The People’s Fair Mural Project returns with seven teams this year (Boys and Girls Club – Wilfley Branch, Urban Peak, Colorado’s Finest Alternative High School, Humanex Academy, Access Gallery, Colorado Youth at Risk, and St. Charles Recreation Center).  The theme for the Mural Project is “Green Up” and each team will create a 6’ x 8’ mural live onsite during the People’s Fair.  Be sure to vote for your favorite team to win the People’s Choice award!  Mayor Michael Hancock will greet the young artists on Saturday at 2pm at the Mural Project location – the Promenade just west of Broadway between Colfax and 14th Street.  The young artists of the Mural Project will receive a visit by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Saturday, June 2.

Music:            The People’s Fair features 130 bands and performance groups on six stages of live local entertainment! You can expect an incredibly eclectic mix of local sound and flavor!

The music stages are: the CHUN Stage (at the Greek Amphitheater); the Miller Stage(on Broadway between 13th and 14th Aves.); the Cricket Wireless Stage (in Lincoln Park near the intersection of 14th and Broadway); the Pepsi Stage (in Lincoln Park near the intersection of Colfax and Broadway); the Studio 1430 Bandstand (in the park near Bannock St.); and the Performance & Cultural Stage sponsored by Green Up Denver(near the Seal Pond).

Food:               Baklava and gyros, barbeque, chocolate-dipped fruits, dumplings and noodles, husk-

roasted corn and turkey legs and many more delicious treats highlight the culinary offerings at the People’s Fair!  Bring your appetite and enjoy the various types of delicious festival cuisine!

Family:           The Kids and Family Area (located both in the center of the park near the Seal Pond

and at Colfax and Broadway) offers everything from free craft projects for kiddos to bounce houses, slides, obstacle courses, bungee trampolines, pony rides, WOW Bubbles (hamster ball experience) and more!  Don’t forget about the ever-popular bubble tower and face painting!  Make your family memories this summer at a People’s Fair “staycation”!

Community:   As a fellow nonprofit organization, Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods has a strong

commitment to help other nonprofits to promote their mission, gain awareness, recruit volunteers and fundraise.  In recent years upwards of 100 nonprofit organizations have participated in the People’s Fair.  Some have exhibited in our “Nonprofit Showcase” while others have helped CHUN by manning a beverage booth on-site.  Nonprofit organizations staffing the beverage booths at the People’s Fair earn a portion of the money raised at their respective booths for their organization.

More:              The Wine Pavilion offers a shady oasis in the middle of the fairgrounds and is the

perfect place to relax while listening to jazz, swing and big band music of the Studio 1430 Bandstand all while sipping a quality glass of wine!

Green Up Denver initiative – The People’s Fair produces more than 17 tons of waste each year.  Our goal this year is to divert 40% of this waste from the landfill.  Please use the recycling and compost bins around the fair grounds to dispose of your waste properly.  We recognize that education is an integral component of a successful Green program, and we are striving to educate our vendors and attendees on ways they can “Go Green.”  Visit our Green Zone in the middle of the park!  Green Squad volunteers are still needed, and will receive lunch from Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli, a pair of Green Up sunglasses, and an official Green Squad t-shirt made from fibers taken from retired plastic bottles!  Thanks to our sponsors – Whole Foods Market and Earthspun Apparel.

Passport Challenge – Taking place both days of the fair, the People’s Fair Passport Scavenger Hunt program presents a number of challenges in and around Civic Center Park.  Participating attendees must complete activities and check in at participating destinations at the fair, and will be given a stamp with each completed activity.  Those who complete seven of the 10 passport activities will be entered to win a number of prizes, including soft drinks for a year from Pepsi, three opportunities for beer for a year courtesy of Miller Lite, concert tickets, and more!

Scooter Raffle – Win a fuel-efficient ride at the People’s Fair!  Purchase a $2 raffle ticket (or 3 for $5) for a chance to win one of two Kymco Like 2T Scooters!  The People’s Fair is once again teaming up with Sportique Scooters and raffling off one scooter per day on the CHUN Stage (Saturday at 7pm, Sunday at 6pm).  Raffle booths will be located at 14th and Broadway and Colfax and Broadway.  The winner need not be present to win.

Volunteer!      Please visit www.peoplesfair.com or call 303-830-1651 to sign up to volunteer at the People’s Fair!  Have fun while you support your community!  Volunteers receive an event production t-shirt, a box lunch from the Tavern Hospitality Group, free Pepsi and water, and free beer after their shift (for those 21 and older).  Volunteers are also invited to our People’s Fair Volunteer Kick-off Party!

Located in the heart of the city at Civic Center Park, getting to the People’s Fair is easy.  There is ample parking within blocks of the park.  The People’s Fair encourages our fairgoers to be GREEN! Take public transportation or ride your bike! Bike Denver and Transportation Solutions will offer secured bicycle parking for $1 at Colfax and Lincoln, in the northeast corner of Lincoln Park.

Statement from CHUN Executive Director, Roger Armstrong:

On behalf of Capitol Hill United Neighborhood’s Board of Delegates, the People’s Fair Steering Committee, our dedicated volunteers and the CHUN staff, I’d like to invite you to attend the 41st Annual Capitol Hill People’s Fair.  It is always our goal to make sure that those of you who have been here over the decades continue to feel the grassroots origins of our beginnings.   From our early days at Morey Middle School, through the years East High School and our last quarter-century at Civic Center Park, we have always tried to stay true to our original mission—to bring community together.  Our blend of local music, non-profit organizations, arts & crafts vendors and culinary diversity has been a mainstay and a proud part of our identity.

Please check out our upgraded greening efforts at this year’s People’s Fair, and please help us reach our goal of 40% waste diversion from the landfill.  When you enjoy a turkey leg and husk-roasted corn, please make sure that you dispose of your food remnants in one of our 50 compost bins around the fairgrounds.  When you enjoy a Miller Lite or a Pepsi, please place your empty beer cup or Pepsi bottle in a recycling bin.  Your help and awareness will help the People’s Fair become a more environmentally-friendly event!

Thank you for joining us June 2 and 3; we look forward to entertaining you!
