First Descents, a Denver-based organization that puts together outdoor adventures for young people who are battling or have battled cancer, is hosting a benefit concert on May 4. The show will take place at the group’s headquarters at 767 Santa Fe Drive, and features musical guests Sean Renner, deCollage, Laura Goldhamer, and touring act H Thunderbolt, as well as live painting by Seth Snowden.

Tickets for the show are $10 at the door and $8 in advance, with 80% going to First Descents and the other 20% to the artists. Each artist will also be donating 50% of money from merchandise sales to First Descents.

“During the FIRST DESCENTS experience, young adult survivors and fighters are empowered through conquering legitimate outdoor challenges to push their limits and face their fears, and by doing so, they are able to regain the confidence and self-efficacy lost to cancer,” says the groups website. “Each program is limited to 15 participants, ensuring individualized care, medical attention, and an intimate experience with fellow survivors. FIRST DESCENTS programs are available to young adults with cancer regardless of their financial means. All meals, accommodations, and program activities are provided free of charge, including travel scholarships, when needed. In 2012 First Descents hosted 46 two-day to weeklong programs across the US and internationally. In 2013 we will host 50+ programs in North, Central, and South America and beyond.”

Headliner, Sean Renner, put the benefit show together. He has been making a name for himself here in Denver over the last couple years. He describes his sound as “organic electronic.” “I play drums, keyboard, guitar, I do vocals and some other percussion things,” says Renner. “I have my own style of looping that I’ve developed where I can put all of those components together and control them during the song.” His music is available at seanrenner.com. He will be releasing a tour-exclusive EP this month on his tour to the Midwest and southeast.

Both Goldhamer as well as Renner will have some visual effects happening during their performances. Learn more about the artists here:
