Chemisty Club is making a name for itself as one of the quickest moving pop groups in the Denver area. The group has carved out its niche by infusing catchy rock melodies with electronic hooks, and Colorado Music Buzz is proud to have the band on board for Higher Ground Music Festival this year. Here is what’s up with Chemistry Club-

CMB: First things first. Give us the story of the band.

CC: We started back in 2012.  Jake and I had backed a few bands together before that; I think my first show with him was in a wedding band for some friends – you know, Beatles covers, Beach Boys, and modern top 40 stuff.  Jake and I got together with our friend Joe, and Joe brought in Micah.  Joe and Micah knew each other from the video game company that later produced our game, Chemistry Club: Navigator.  Joe left the band just before the release of our first EP, and Jake brought in Dylan, who has become a truly important part of the sound.

We all really bonded over a serious, unabashed love of pop music, story telling, and nerd life.  All of us are actual, real-life pop fans – and actual, real-life dorks.  It just kind of worked.  Over the next three years, we released a couple of EPs, a few singles, and a video game. And very soon we’ll be releasing our first comic book.  It’s part of our sci-fi concept series, Copia, which we kicked off last year with our album, The Electric Hush.  We have a lot of cool stuff coming up, and we can’t wait to share it.

CMB: You make it pretty apparent on your Facebook page that you like science. It is even referenced in your band name. Are you closet scientists? Or does anyone in the band have a background in chemistry?

CC: We are definitely all science fans, and are all generally science-minded, analytical types.  It makes for pretty interesting side conversations at practice.  It’s kind of become a mission, to bring that mindset to pop music.  We really love math, science, sci-fi, comics, and video games.  There should be pop music for that kind of person, and that’s kind of what we do.

CMB: What direction do you see pop music heading this year?

CC: Well, I imagine there will be at least one sci-fi concept album coming out this year.  I bet it will be awesome and that everyone will love it.  Also, disco sounds seem to be pretty big this year – that MisterWives track is for real.

CMB: Other than HGMF, what is Chemistry Club up to this year?

CC: We’re working hard on the Copia album series, gearing up for the second chapter. We’re talking with some other artists about future comics projects, and with a few other musicians about some collaborations.  Should be a very fun year.

CMB: What is the best place to check out your tunes?

CC: We’re up the major platforms – iTunes, Google Play, Bandcamp, Amazon, etc., and you can always go to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and www.chemistryclubmusic.com to check out the new things we’re working on.
