Some bands just have the right sound, the right style, and the right look for Colorado. Even if they are from Indiana. Houndmouth is one of those groups, and they just made their Rocky Mountain debut at the Snowmass Mammoth Festival on June 14.

The four piece, consisting of three stylish dudes and one beautiful woman, has been moving quickly. They have taken full advantage of the lack of competition in their hometown of New Albany, Indiana and quickly emerged as a big player in the region. They knew, however, that they needed to travel to keep putting their music in new ears.

After just getting started in late 2011, the group got on the road by early 2012 and landed themselves a record deal. “We went down to South By Southwest (in 2012), that’s how we got signed,” says front man Matt Myers. “There’s not a lot of bands that come out of New Albany. It’s kind of nice because its not really a mainstream-discovered place.”

While the band worked hard to get discovered outside of New Albany, they had not discovered high-altitude drinking until they got to Colorado. “It still gets you every time,” says Myers.

“About the time you think you got it down, then it gets ya,” says Zak Appleby.

Other than drinking, the band gets inspiration from writing from the soul. Their songs are heartfelt, and when watching the guys perform live, it is easy to see that Myers and the rest of the band are very passionate about what they do. “I think it’s writing from what comes from within, rather than trying to figure out what’s going on in the buzz world,” says Myers. “If you do something that is true, that you feel is good, then you put it out, I feel like that’s more than trying to think about it and say ‘Hey, I think the people would like this kind of song.’”

Houndmouth begins the recording process for their next record in August, with a hopeful early 2015 release date. “We’re not sure about the dates yet, we’re just excited to go record,” says Myers. In the meantime, check out their existing tunes at all of the major online distributors.
