M.I.X.- Electrohead

M.I.X. is a local music collective, spearheaded by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan M. Smith, and rounded out by various other area musicians that all contribute to the final product, a fusion of their many different influences that incorporates both dance floor ready beats, and ethereal world sounds into a “mix” that is uniquely their own.

With Smith’s latest release, he makes an ambitious attempt at creating an album that move across many genres, something that is risky when trying to make a cohesive EP, yet something that is desperately needed in a time of cookie-cutter releases and predictable, formulaic music production. Smith manages to bring a variety of influences to the table, from EDM styles to traditional Eastern music, and it is best exhibited on tracks like “Darkness Shines” and “Trippin’ on a Drug Called Life”, in which he uses clever sound synthesis and extended builds to bring the listener into an almost trance-like state, and in “AfroEurasia”, which layers eastern bells and percussion to create a distinctly “world” texture, suitable for a stroll through a Balinese market place.
