Mural Project and “The Mural Show” Showcases Talent of Local Youth Artists

Denver, Colo. – May 29, 2012 – Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) is pleased to announce that the 2012 Capitol Hill People’s Fair Mural Project will focus on the theme of “Green Up Denver.”  Participating youth teams have worked for the past few months to conceptualize a design and will create 6’ x 8’ murals onsite at the People’s Fair, June 2 and 3.

This year’s Mural Project participants will receive a visit from Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, and a photo opportunity for members of the media is available at roughly 2:00pm on Saturday, June 2 at the Mural Project location at Civic Center Park.  The Mural Project will again be located in the Promenade just west of Broadway between 14thAve. and Colfax.

The Mural Project is a theme-based art competition in which small teams of young Denver artists design and execute a 6’ x 8’ canvas mural.  Participating organizations this year include Boys and Girls Club – Wilfley Branch, Colorado’s Finest Alternative High School, Humanex Academy, Access Gallery, Colorado Youth at Risk, and Your Name in Graffiti Art education program at St. Charles Recreation Center.

The students’ designs will be judged by a panel of community leaders and local artists, and a prize will be given to the winning team as voted on by the judges.  This year’s judges include Beth McCann (State Representative House District 8), Councilwoman Jeanne Robb (District 10), Councilman Albus Brooks (District 8), At-large Councilwoman Robin Kniech, Heather Larrabee and Megan O’Connor of Whole Foods Market, and Ryan Oestreich (Director of Denver FilmCenter/Colfax).  People’s Fair attendees are welcome and encouraged to vote for their favorite design to win the “People’s Choice” award.

Following the fair, all of the completed murals will be on display at Access Gallery (909 Santa Fe Drive, Denver) from June 8-22.  A special thanks to Home Depot Home Services and Access Gallery for making possible the Mural Project and the Mural Show!
