Kyle Hollingsworth is perhaps best known as the keyboardist of legendary jam outfit String Cheese Incident, but that is far from all he has been up to lately. He recently hit the east coast with Incidental Animals, and will be performing at Hodi’[s Half Note in Fort Collins with his solo project, the Kyle Hollingsworth Band on December 14, with an opening slot at the Fillmore Auditorium alongside Lettuce on December 13. We caught up with Kyle to discuss his latest projects, touring aspirations, and his affection for micro brew.

CMB: What’s up with a new album? Any info to share?

KH: Still digging in pretty hard with it. It’s in the final stages, but I want to wait to release it after the new SCI disc comes out.

CMB: Is there one certain genre that you are focusing on more than others right now?

KH: That’s a tough question. By my nature, I’m always experimenting with different styles.

My new disc will have elements of a dance record as well as fusion Herbie Hancock moments.

But overall, I have been attracted to melodies with good hooks melodically and lyrically.

CMB: What are your plans heading into the New Year for the Kyle Hollingsworth Band?

KH: MEXICO with KHB!

CMB: Anybody you would be excited to collaborate with that you haven’t yet?

KH: I’m hoping to get Bonnie form Elephant Revival to sing on a couple tracks. That will be fun.

CMB: Outside of SCI, who is a blast to tour with? Anybody you would move your schedule around for the opportunity to hit the road with?

KH: I did have a blast with Incidental Animals last month. Let’s do that again!

CMB: How were the recent gigs with Incidental Animals? Anything else on the horizon with that project?

KH: Incidental Animals was a great time, such great musicians and good people. I say we bring it to Colorado!

CMB: So you’re pretty into beer- What’s in your fridge right now? Do you brew your own, or is your status as a local aficionado just because of your taste?

KH: Stone IPA right now. And, Yes, I have been home brewing for about 25 years. I love the experimentation, trial and error that can occur both in brewing and improvisational music. Most anything can happen and sometimes it’s the mistakes that come out best.

I have been fortunate enough to make over 18 beers with national breweries across the US. Including Sierra Nevada, Odell and SweetWater. And, of course, Hoopla with Boulder Beer. And there is a rumor of another bottled beer with Stone in the spring. Yippee!
