With the enlistment of producer Brendan O’Brien, the Fray returns to their formidable roots of the first album, How To Save a Life. While their sophomore release fell short on sales and establishment as true pop icons, the latest recording, Scars and Stories, more than makes up for it with memorable hooks, lyrics and of course Isaac Slade’s crooning vocal passages. While reaching for the Coldplay and U2 comparisons (both applicable), the Fray stretches back to what it does best; write grand, anthemic, brilliant songs in the vein that Joe King and Slade have been known for.

They do a great job diversifying with lush rockers “The Wind” and “Here We Are” to the lullaby “Be Still” and raw “1961”. The core Fray fans will definitely relate to “The Fighter” and “Munich”.

You may have forgotten these boys are local Colorado products – and we, as a collective music scene, are that much better because of it.
