Friday, October 19, found Alesana shredding the Summit Music Hall. Playing alongside was British band Glamour of the Kill, LA based metal group Vampires Everywhere!, metal core heavy hitters In Fear and Faith and All Human; the solo project of former Fear Before front man and Colorado native, Adam Fisher. The crowd went crazy as Alesana took the stage and played the opening notes of “Hand in Hand with the Damned,” off their last album A Place Where the Sun is Silent. After playing an incredible set with many standouts such as “Apology” and “The Thespian,” the band played an energetic rendition of “Annabel” that had the entire audience screaming the words followed by “Beyond the Sacred Glass.”

Although they’ve had a frequently changing lineup, Alesana’s latest lineup consists of Shawn Milke, Dennis Lee, Patrick Thompson (the remaining founders), Shane Crump, Jeremy Bryan and Jake Campbell. With Milke on rhythm guitar, clean vocals and piano, Lee doing the heavier screaming and Thompson on lead guitar, the front men of Alesana put on a fierce show. Equally important are the strong foundation and showmanship of Crump on bass and backup vocals, Bryan on drums, and Campbell on second lead guitar who give the band the full, complicated sound they are known for.

Alesana is a difficult band to classify, featuring a huge range of sounds from light pop punk riffs to heavy dark screams. Having had many labels from pop metal to emo/screamo thrown at them, they describe themselves as “sweetcore,” a lampoon of the “core” suffix often added to genres. After forming in 2004, Alesana put out their first EP, Try This With Your Eyes Closed, in May of 2005. The latest album the guys put out, A Place Where the Sun is Silent, was released in October of last year. They are currently in the beginning stages of production for their fifth release.
