Denver recording studio, Black in Bluhm Music, in conjunction with For the Love of Punk, Reverie Brewing Company and Electra Video, has kicked off a new program called BiB Sessions. Each session, there has been one so far, brings in a touring band and has them record one song. Ryan McNurney, with Electra, films the process as it happens, and FTLP streams the song exclusively as its initial release. “The idea is, the band comes into the studio, they get to have a day of free recording,” says owner/operator Chris Fogal. “They get to have something to look forward to on their tour. They get to eat free, drink free, the whole thing is free for the bands and everybody involved with it volunteers their time to make it happen.”

The first session took place August 8 with an Oklahoma City band, Red City Radio. “Red City Radio is a band that is on the same label as the Gamits,” says Fogal. “At this point, that was the first one, but I think the general idea is to find a band that is good enough to play a song live, get live mixes going, let the band do their thing, and get live footage of it.”

They had the song mixed, video ready, and had everything posted about two weeks after Red City Radio came in and laid down their track. FTLP has exclusive rights to stream the song for the first couple weeks, after which the band has free reign to do what they want.

“Everybody benefits from it,” says Fogal. “The band gets to do whatever they want with the audio recording or the video. And it’s fun for us.”

Rackhouse Pub is supplying the food for the sessions, and Reverie Brewing Co. is providing the beer. “Now they are fully sponsoring the studio,” says Fogal. “Pretty soon we’ll have a keg running all the time.”

“I hope that it’s a cool enough idea that once more people see it, it’ll get easier and easier,” says Fogal. “We’re looking at rosters of venues, and see who’s coming through, and see if there’s any bands that are perfect for this.

“We’re trying to get our name out beyond Denver,” Fogal says. Drag The River is the next session, taking place October 20. Black in Bluhm started in October of 2009 in Fogal’s basement, and moved into their current location at 4655 E. Colfax at the end of last year.
